
To What Extent Do Schools Have an Effect on the Social Connections Among Adolescents in the United States?

Physical schools remain the primary, irreplaceable engine for adolescent social development by providing the structured, face-to-face interactions necessary for neurological and psychological well-being.

Introduction
For over a century, education reform in the United States has implemented techniques aimed at transitioning from traditional teaching practices to prioritizing the holistic development of students’ social, emotional, and interpersonal growth. As a result, “school has been acknowledged as a place for learning [and an] important place for adolescents to foster social interactions” (Wang & Hofkens, 2019). Because students spend most of their time in schools, they need social connections to maintain their psychological and physical well-being.
The Office of the Surgeon General (OSG, 2023) emphasizes that social interaction is necessary to avoid an unhealthy lifestyle. Similarly, Ferreira et al. (2021) state that third places bridge loneliness and social connectivity gaps. A separate space from home and work builds an important social infrastructure. Schools, despite being a secondary place, are more conducive to developing adolescent minds. A lack of interactions amongst adolescents can lead to future detrimental effects. As stated in the Surgeon General's advisory, a lack of social connections is equivalent to “smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day” and consuming up to “six alcoholic drinks daily” (OSG, 2023).
Schools, therefore, have a responsibility to support adolescents in building relationships through peer-to-peer interactions, extracurricular activities, and group work. Additionally, school routines such as lunchtime allow students to learn about different backgrounds, deepening their understanding of others. Reforming education practices is crucial for adolescents to develop relationships; educators who need a fully engaged community; and guardians who need schools to support their children’s growth and development.
Nevertheless, opponents argue that digital platforms (social media or video games) have a greater influence in shaping adolescents’ social development, as they can engage with others around the world. However, these environments lack structure, intellectual enrichment, and a collaborative atmosphere to stimulate the mind and social interconnectedness. Too much digital usage can produce negative physiological and psychological problems such as “eye strain, neck and shoulder pain,” as well as depression and anxiety (Devi & Singh, 2023). As a result, policymakers have implemented “phone bans” in many states to promote social interactions amongst students. Insufficient interaction can hinder adolescent brain development. Schools provide the necessary mechanisms for students to be socially engaged and academically enriched, making them a fundamental secondary place for social development.
This presents the question: To what extent do schools have an effect on the social connections among adolescents in the United States? Therefore, schools remain the primary influence on adolescents’ social connections in the United States—they provide structured peer-to-peer interaction, a collaborative environment for building relationships, and diverse social settings that support adolescents’ mental, physical, and social awareness.
The Scientific & Health Necessity
Schools create opportunities for consistent interactions, allowing adolescents to engage with people and develop bonds along their academic journey. A lack of interaction leads to negative health outcomes in adulthood. The Surgeon General's report cites that, “among men, deaths due to suicide are associated with loneliness and more strongly with indicators of objective isolation such as living alone,” and that “chronic loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of developing dementia by approximately 50% in older adults” (OSG, 2023). These findings highlight the severe long-term negative effects of loneliness.
Schools play an important role in addressing this issue through various opportunities for social interaction. The World Health Organization argued that “social connections protect health across the lifespan—reducing inflammation, lowering the risk of serious health problems, fostering mental health, and preventing early death.” Minimal interactions can improve their well-being, while a lack of social connection increases the chance of a stroke, heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, and thoughts of suicide (World Health Organization, 2025).
Social interaction is biologically necessary for physical and neurological progression. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore (2018) claimed that adolescents’ “social brains” are undergoing a series of information processing and filtration at school. Schools immerse students in a plethora of information, strengthening different parts of the brain. Schools also teach students how to handle conflict resolution and make decisions, strengthening the prefrontal cortex of the brain. In a controlled, supervised environment, the medial prefrontal cortex learns to process social cues while the amygdala regulates emotional impulses. Xiao et al. (2022) establish that schools provide controlled social cues to neurologically shape adolescents into productive adults.
Schools throughout the United States prioritize encouraging social connectedness to combat chronic loneliness. “Schools play a key role in creating connectedness—by using strategies that are inclusive” (CDC, 2024). The United States strives to create environments where adolescents feel a sense of belongingness. American adolescents agree that “school connectedness is the sense of being cared for, supported, and belonging, which is fostered by a caring and supportive educational environment” (Wilkins et al., 2023).
The Academic Infrastructure
Schools address psychological effects by offering school-based extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities strengthen students’ academic performance, improve teamwork, and help students feel a sense of belonging. According to a national poll, 80% of middle and high school students in the United States participate in at least one school-based extracurricular activity (C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 2018). Evidently, students consider extracurricular activities an important part of their daily life. A chess club, for example, allows students to “develop their confidence among other students” (Editorial, 2022). Extracurricular activities promote social connectedness and help build a sense of community amongst adolescents.
In the United States, school field trips allow adolescents to “engage with peers in a different context, hone communication skills, and learn how to work more effectively as a team" (Costanzo, 2024), allowing adolescents to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, teaching them how to thrive in their professional lives. “Field trips offer valuable learning opportunities that help students establish connections between the classroom curricula and real-world concepts” (St. Timothy’s School, 2023). Schools simulate the third space experience within a supervised setting. Students still have the opportunity to interact with one another and build friendships. This hybrid approach makes schools more effective than traditional third places.
Social interactions cultivated in schools establish meaningful relationships that ensure that students are immersed in an environment aimed at nurturing their growth and development. The teenage brain undergoes different phases of development, yearning for acceptance, battling an identity crisis, and navigating a period of confusion and struggle (Ragelienė, 2016). By defining a sense of identity and establishing relationships, different levels of neurological intricacies are unlocked that strengthen bonds. The adolescent brain becomes sensitive to peer influence, and when faced with diverse groups, adolescents’ ability to learn from families, friends, and peers improves. Essentially, these interactions help the brain develop identity, interests, passions, and social cues.
Schools provide the stability necessary for development within a controlled environment. The OSG (2023) advisory establishes that social connections are a fundamental human need for belongingness—the feeling of collective experiences. Schools facilitate “face-to-face” interaction which correlates with the idea “that children and adolescents who enjoy positive relationships with their peers, parents, and teachers experience improved academic outcomes [while] the lack of inhibits student progression in higher education settings" (OSG, 2023).
Counterclaim
While schools may provide the premise for strong social and academic development, the post-pandemic period reshaped teenage interaction. Schools must stay abreast of how adolescents utilize digital and urban landscapes to bypass traditional methods of interaction. A 2025 Pulse Survey from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital revealed that 71% of teens formed valuable relationships online, with 50% meeting their social circle in virtual spaces. This suggests that digital spaces can provide social ecosystems equivalent to those of physical schools.
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a period of isolationism where adolescents had to transition to digital third spaces. Unlike coffee shops that offer urban belongingness (Ferreira et al., 2021), the pandemic restricted physical venues. To alleviate loneliness, adolescents repaved their social pathways to redefine new third places. Teens seek unrestricted sources for connections and identity that the physical school cannot always emulate.
Platforms such as Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft serve as interest-based virtual third places for free expression. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA, 2024) reported that video games foster connection and communication across all demographics. Sixty-two percent of teens find building virtual worlds just as meaningful as forging relationships on a sports team, forming long-distance intimacy that was once inconceivable.
Lockdown also popularized digital lounges like Discord, Twitch, and live streams on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok Live, allowing students to connect with a large-scale network similar to gathering in a school hallway. Social media enables adolescents to showcase their creativity through video-sharing, serving as a “social buffer against stress and isolation" (OSG, 2023). It has become a digitized third space to explore identity, engage in an online community, establish an online brand, and ultimately form a place of belonging without geographical limitations.
Rebuttal
Although digital platforms improve certain baseline interactions among adolescents, schools remain significantly more effective because they provide a structured environment for consistent face-to-face connections. Neurological research indicates that excessive screen time can hinder cognitive growth. Rocha-Dores et al. (as cited in contemporary literature) and associated neurological frameworks reveal that the “social brain” requires non-verbal cues that are largely unreproducible on video platforms. Ongoing, unchecked digital connectivity might actually exacerbate the adverse effects of social alienation and “increase depression and anxiety” levels (OSG, 2023).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, limited face-to-face interaction propelled the loneliness epidemic forward. In response, legislators in approximately 37 states have required “districts to restrict students’ mobile usage” (Prothero et al., 2024) to prioritize real-time personal interaction. These policies overall encourage in-person connections and actively retrain students to interact on a personal, human level.
Concurrently, schools have adopted hybrid models to bridge these emerging social gaps. Schools now use digital spaces for community marketing and creative collaboration to build an engaged academic community. Educators receive specialized training in digital media to ensure that technology enriches, rather than replaces, human connection (Rizk & Davies, 2021). While digital spaces provide immediate opportunities for communication, they cannot replicate the diverse, structured developmental and health benefits that physical schools provide.
Limitations
This argument’s scope is somewhat limited since it excludes the nuanced experiences of homeschooled adolescents (Home Schooling, n.d.). “Learning cooperatives or homeschool co-ops are formed when families get together for academics, activities, projects, and more” (Treehouse Schoolhouse, 2025). These alternative social settings create distinct peers-to-peer influences that aren't fully accounted for in this paper. However, since “roughly 6% of U.S. school-age children are educated at home” (Ray, 2025), these omissions do not invalidate the broader patterns observed in the public education system.
Socioeconomic limitations were also omitted from the immediate data, particularly the reality that public education funding gaps create vast systemic disparities. Social connections and experiences gained from school-sanctioned extracurriculars are frequently viewed as non-essential and targets for budgetary cuts. These omissions from school curriculums are detrimental to social development, meaning this study fails to fully account for adolescents attending underfunded schools where collaborative social experiences are structurally unavailable.
Additionally, the study fails to evaluate how the “social brain” processes information among neurodivergent adolescents. For example, students on the autism spectrum who might experience heightened levels of anxiety or environmental stress might be less responsive in a traditional school setting. The study does not fully account for how these individuals connect in what should be a carefully crafted social structure. An overload of sensory details in a crowded school building might occasionally be counterproductive to establishing social connectedness and belongingness.
Implications
The findings definitively identify schools as primary facilitators for structural “social education.” Schools have a systemic responsibility to nurture and foster this biological development. As frontline responders addressing the loneliness epidemic, schools must oversee social engagement to mitigate long-term physical ailments and mental health crises.
This responsibility underscores a clear medical urgency in maintaining adolescent social well-being. Policy limitations or structural constraints might require schools to eliminate programs due to budget-cutting, threatening sports teams, extracurriculars, clubs, and field trips—thereby restricting social interaction outside of the traditional classroom setting. Evidence shows that while technology shapes communication options, fully integrating into an exclusively digital environment presents critical risks to the organic development of social cues, potentially hindering social acumen well into adulthood.
Conclusion
Evidence affirms that the American schooling system provides an irreplaceable social structure for holistic adolescent development. This academic environment immerses adolescents in a setting where diversity and personal development coexist. Socio-cultural interaction is systematically strengthened through extracurriculars and activities, both on and off campus. This biological necessity equips students with the structural competencies needed for adulthood. Schools offer a unique environment where adolescents must learn how to actively collaborate alongside one another.
Schools’ social scaffolding (structured time for extracurriculars and external enrichment, such as field trips) operates as a biological necessity that teaches students how to not only navigate new experiences through peer interaction, but also equips them with foundational social skills. Ultimately, the school environment refines the development of the “social brain”—the cognitive functions developed when adolescents are challenged, respond, and adapt to face-to-face interactions with peers and figures of authority.
This means that schools promote social development in a way that is vastly different from first (home) and tertiary (communal/commercial) places, because they allow for structured, repetitive social interaction among a consistent, diverse group of peers and teachers. In an established system where adolescents learn and play under circumstances intentionally designed to hone their overall development, far more structural benefits are provided than simple, self-guided interaction on social media platforms or video games. Although the argument is bounded by limitations regarding alternative educational models, research and foundational health literature confirm that schools play a fundamental, irreplaceable role in shaping adolescent growth and human connection.
