Reconstructing the Social Fabric: Addressing the Loneliness Epidemic Among Elderly Americans


Introduction

The U.S. population has been grappling with a public health concern identified as an epidemic of loneliness—a crisis that carries a mortality risk synonymous to that of smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. The elderly population are affected by dwindling social circles and failing health conditions. “American sociologist Ray Oldenburg developed the concept of a third place: a space for informal, free social interaction”. Third places such as community centers, libraries, and parks provide stability for this population and establish a sense of belongingness. Traditional medical practices have placed an emphasis on the physical ailments, but studies have shown that the psychological deterioration as a result of a reduced social connection, progressively threatens the human connection.


While being immersed in an environment surrounded by people enhances the livelihoods of the elderly, the decline of third places has created a void as a result of COVID-19. Unfortunately, technological advances have created sources of interactions and “digital-third” places where seniors are unable to adapt. Ongoing challenges to cater to the elderly population underscores the importance of the roles amongst society’s members—medical professionals, urban planners, families, technological developers, and more—who must work collaboratively to redesign social connections to cater to the elderly population and ensure that their biological, environmental, and technological needs are met.


Nevertheless, ongoing costs of living continue to increase, shifting the income-inequality gap. Likewise, technological changes and adaptation has proven to be difficult for the elderly population. These changes intensify anxiety rather than bring relief, making traditional third places obsolete and ineffective. However, advanced AI tools, tele-communication devices, and urban planning are all factors that can help aging individuals bypass the social barriers. Despite the limitations in this research, the evidence found from the studies highlights the importance of understanding how the elderly population is adversely affected by an inadequate social circle. Not only is social interaction a biological need, but having an effective third place also supports the ongoing question—to what extent does social interaction affect mental health among the elderly population in the United States?


Scientific Perspective | The Biological Necessity

Social interaction has been crucial especially amongst the elderly population. Older adults need to establish social relationships in order to rectify mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder (MDD). The Missouri State Medical Association argued that social isolation originates from a lack of meaningful social interactions, networks, or belongingness and detachment create risk factors affecting one’s health. Social interaction is a biological requirement, enhancing physical development and neurological progression in the elderly population. Researchers from Humanities and Social Sciences Communications emphasized that lifestyle habits influence cognitive health. Strong social relationships and participations in activities had the biggest impact on maintaining cognitive function.


The Missouri State Medical Association examined older adults during COVID-19 pandemic and found that 94% of those who were socially isolated experienced loneliness. COVID-19 isolation created periods of inadequate interactions, adversely affecting the older population psychologically and neurologically. According to Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, social isolation affects overall health. A lack of social support has been an indicator that progresses depression and anxiety among middle-aged and older adults in the U.S. The study assesses the health implications—cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, diabetes, depression, anxiety, and even death—were associated with social seclusion amongst Americans. The Office of Surgeon General provides several reasons to advocate for the importance of social connections as a protective measure to improve health and longevity. The loneliness epidemic has proven to be more than just a struggle to find social support among others. The physiological data gathered from these studies imply that social connections are essential to nurturing what could be progressive health failures that can later create a burden to the national healthcare system.


Socio-Cultural Perspective | Third Places

Third places and communal centers establish a sense of belonging and centers of meaningful interactions for the elderly. Ferreira et al. noted that people develop connections in tertiary places—spaces for leisure, work, and fostering social connection. The study emphasizes potential locations of “belongingness” to cope with loneliness. Sugiyama et al. argues that third places (cafes, parks, and community centers) support social interactions among older adults as they are designed to improve the livelihood and overall well-being. Furthermore, researchers from the Research in Gerontological Nursing, examined how loneliness amongst older U.S veterans hinders the rehabilitation process back into normalcy. The researchers concluded that veterans can avoid PTSD related ailments by interacting in social settings that seem “familiar” to them.


Additionally, in an article published by Sun et al. the study assesses the quality of green spaces and found that better-quality green spaces correlate with more social interaction as it yields many mental health benefits such as stress, depression, and anxiety reduction. Studies confirmed that being socially immersed in communal spaces is essential for overall wellness. Tertiary places like cafes, parks, and rehabilitation centers can all contribute to an increased feeling of acceptance and a decrease in social isolation.


Futuristic Perspective | Technological Advancements

Taking a futuristic perspective in understanding how technology is being integrated into our lives, medical professionals are now utilizing robots in elderly care. New advancements are effective toward the elderly population as they contribute to improving their health and quality of living. Scoglio et al. recognized that technology in health care is aimed at improving patient care and cost-effectiveness. Socially assistive robots (SARs) are built with audio, visual, and movement capabilities to manage patient care and wellbeing. The usage of SARs in mental health interventions and the opportunities for improving elder care also highlight the struggle they face as noted in a journal by World Psychiatry, where Reynolds et al. discuss the challenges older adults continue to face alongside new ideas and technology. Having medical care groups that advocate for social welfare along with technology that improves efficiency helps the elderly population know that they are being monitored and cared for.


As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly prevalent in our lives, the researchers took a look at how AI can be incorporated into the lives of older adults to improve quality of life and reduce mental health complications. The authors Yang et al. argue that AI has applications that can overcome challenges that inhibit the elderly population. Through their research, the authors found that AI provides a level of sophistication where the elderly have access to a 24/7 support line. By using AI as utility tools (voice assistant or a human facilitator), researchers found that these robots provide a level of personalized interaction. AI tools such as robots, were utilized to give the elderly a degree of social connection they lacked along with additional features. New developments in AI act as tools to help the elderly get the social connections they need in order to sustain a healthy life.


Counterclaim

Although social interaction is encouraged, in order to stimulate cognitive function and improve mobility, physical proximity limits certain demographics of the aging population to a life of seclusion. From a health perspective, exposure to certain chronic illnesses and having a compromised immune system limits the elderly population’s ability to interact in social settings. Rather than risk over-exposure and jeopardize health conditions, Wang et al. proposes low-risk interactions such as “porch visits” —activities that “reduce outdoor activities [but continue to] promote social interactions and physical activity, ultimately improving health”. Such was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic when infected patients with preexisting conditions remained quarantined for extended periods, making physical interaction in a “third place” impractical and dangerous.


Affordability is yet another impediment that places restrictions on effective interactions, shifting engagement from traditional third places to more accessible public settings. As the cost of living increases, the elderly population needs to find alternative forms of interaction that are more practical. Affordability places limitations on what seniors have access to and restricts access to publicly funded community programs that aim to promote belongingness. According to Cudjoe et al., affordability limits engagement and limited access to basic services such as transportation, third places, and social programs results in higher rates of social isolation. Affordability hindrances create an inopportune situation that places limits on individual participation among the aging populations.


Technological adaptation presents a learning curve that the elderly population are hesitant to adapt to. Jan van Dijk, a Professor of Communication Science and Sociology of the Information Society at the University of Twente, claimed that digital inequality is not just about having access to developing skills and usability, which is disproportionate amongst the elderly, and according to Seifert et al. lower digital skills will result in increased social isolation and cognitive impairments. As technology improves, the elderly population will encounter challenges that require more learning and adaptation. Advancements in artificial intelligence, technological devices, and apps might have the goal of improving efficiency but might actually be counterproductive since it may create a technological divide.


Rebuttal

Nevertheless, medical professionals state that limited social interaction is better than complete isolation. While third places might be problematic for those with weak immune systems, accessing spaces of healing that focus on mental health and stimulation might prove to be just as effective. Likewise, free public infrastructures launched by urban planners create an opportunity where financial contingents are either removed or minimized in an effort to cater to the impoverished.


Lastly, technology has been evolving at a rate to cater to all. For example, tele-health communication devices are meant to help improve the interaction and accessibility between patients and their health-care professionals. New AI tools and Socially Assistive Robots (SARs) have been designed to make living more practical. These technologies have been programmed to respond to voice recognition, monitor motion, and record/synthesize information. These progressive changes have been put in place to allow the population to focus on the quality of interaction between the elderly population and the community they inhibit.


Limitations

Although there are several benefits addressed as to why social interactions and the use of third places is vital among the elderly population, there are limitations that present challenges. By focusing on only the elderly population, the scope of the study was restricted; however, if broadened to other age groups (children, adolescents, middle-aged adults) and geographical areas including outside of the U.S., the study gained a deeper perspective and severity of this ongoing issue. With changes in technological innovation and findings in the medical space, the study omits current studies underway that could have future implications to remedy the loneliness epidemic.


Solutions

In order to implement effective changes relating to isolationism, communal spaces have roles in aiding the elderly population. For example, there should be more of a focus in prioritizing the elderly population’s needs with programs and settings that are essential to them. This might include developing community and senior centers, modernizing libraries, and creating more green spaces for social interaction. These spaces can potentially reduce anxiety and establish a sense of belongingness. Additionally, since physical decline has proven to be a hindrance towards seeking treatment and necessary care, new clinical treatment options could be provided to the elderly to cater to those with mobility issues. This might include porch visits or teledoc services where digital treatment is now accessible on demand.

Lastly, the emergence of the digital-world has left many feeling that they themselves are becoming obsolete. Adapting to AI trends and technologies such as SARs and voice recognition tools, has been a change for elders to adapt to. Providing courses and training outlets equips the elderly with the opportunity to stay connected and interact while still being cognitively enriched.


Conclusion

Ultimately, evidence and research has found that social interaction is a fundamental biological necessity amongst the elderly population across the U.S. Engaging with others promotes healthy cognitive and emotional functioning for the elderly. The U.S. Surgeon General established a direct link between quality social connections and mental health. Third places have been a basis for maintaining the link between physiological and cognitive function and meeting the basic human need of feeling belongingness. By examining this issue through a scientific, socio-cultural, and futuristic perspective, the ongoing epidemic isolationism is continuously being reassessed.


However, social interaction must be rethought within safer and more affordable options to help bridge the many hurdles of an aging population. Affordability to access supportive social environments and programs to promote healthy functioning can be a concern for many older adults who are living on fixed incomes. Gaining access to technology that can facilitate communication can pose challenges for older adults including the reality of the digital divide and the potential for increased feelings of isolation in today’s society. Social connections amongst the elderly is more than just leisurely activity—it's a psychological necessity.
